“I believe that the proclamation of an international day of happiness… (is) a forward looking way of focusing on the value of happiness as a universal goal and aspiration on the lives of all,” said Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser for the United Nations’ news and media website. Al-Nasser is the current President of the General Assembly.

The resolution aims to acknowledge global good cheer, and is less a mandate than “a concerted move to promote wellbeing and happiness in the lives of human beings around the world,” according to Laughter Yoga International. Laughing yoga is a practice of yoga that combines laughter with breathing for a “complete wellbeing workout,” and whose goals for happiness align with the efforts of the UN to seek and recognize joy in the world.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon explained the need to recognize emotional health amid today’s international fiscal crisis and other economic woes. “Social, economic, and environmental well-being are indivisible,” he said, as stated on the School of Laughter Yoga’s website. “Together they define gross global happiness.”
